FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Blackbelt Retrievers

General Services & Training

1. What types of training does Blackbelt Retrievers offer?

We offer comprehensive programs including basic obedience, advanced obedience, gun-dog training, retriever training, upland training, family companion training, and board-and-train programs. We customize each program to the dog’s age, temperament, and goals.

2. Do you train breeds other than Labrador Retrievers?

Yes. Although we’re known for world-class Labs, we train all breeds, including German Shorthaired Pointers, Golden Retrievers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Spaniels (Boykin & Springer), Dutch/German Shepherds, Pudelpointers and family pets of all breeds.

3. Do you offer obedience training for non-hunting dogs?

Absolutely. We provide all-breed obedience for dogs of all ages, whether you want a well-mannered house dog or a reliable outdoor partner.

4. What commands are included in your basic obedience program?

Basic obedience typically includes sit, heel, come/recall, down, place, kennel, leash manners, crate conditioning, and impulse control. We focus on building reliability in real-world situations.

5. What does your hunting dog training program include?

Our gun-dog training covers steadiness, marking, water retrieves, blinds, e-collar conditioning, delivery to hand, steadiness at the line, gunfire conditioning, decoys, boats, birds, and real hunting scenarios.  We also partner with Soggy Bottom Lodge and take dogs on actual hunts.  We also offer the opportunity to take dogs on wild bird hunts across the country and this depends on timing and availability.

6. Do you offer advanced or “finished dog” training?

Yes. Advanced programs include multiple marks, blinds, advanced handling and whistle work, real-hunt scenarios, and preparation for hunt tests or field trials.

7. How long does training take?

Training timelines vary, but most programs run 4–8 weeks for basic obedience and 4–12 months for full hunting dog or finished retriever programs. We tailor the schedule to each dog’s progress.  Timelines really depend on owner’s expectations.  However, in general when you push a dog trying to make dogs fit into our timelines it is not good for the dog.  Dogs are unique.  They  progress and mature differently.

8. Do you accept dogs with behavioral issues?

Yes — depending on the issue. We work with dogs that need confidence building, socialization, impulse control, or structured behavior work. Serious aggression cases are evaluated individually.

9. Do you offer board-and-train?

Yes. Dogs stay at our facility with daily training, exercise, socialization, and professional care.

Breeding, Puppies & Genetics

10. Do you only breed Labrador Retrievers?

We primarily breed balanced, family-friendly Labrador Retrievers capable of excelling in hunting and field work. On occasion, we work with other retriever breeds depending on demand and available genetics.  We have Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Pudelpointer’s too.

11. What health testing do you do before breeding?

Our sires and dams undergo genetic testing, OFA hips and elbows, cardiac testing, and screening for hereditary diseases. We also use imported frozen semen from proven field champions.

Puppies come with:
